Garden - Landscaping

HOME

In the UK there seems to have been a tremendous enthusiasm for redesigning gardens and making the outdoor space of a home an extension of the planned living space. Patios for the sun lounger and the barbecue, shaded rest areas, vegetable plots, variety and colour are all so important these days.

MAPPING

Before embarking on any re-design of your garden it helps to map out on paper what the actual area you are re-landscaping is. Mark out the measurements and boundaries; note where the dense shade is and also the partial shade as well as the sunny areas. All this information will help with the final plan. If you have any ideas of what you envisage try sketching it out however roughly as it can be so much easier for anyone else involved to see what you want to achieve that way.

LIGHT AND SHADE

Taking note of where the light and shade is will help not only in where you want to make sitting areas and patios but will also affect the type of plants you can successfully grow in each part of the garden. This information will be essential when shopping for plants where the array of colour and texture will be overwhelming if you have not got some ideas to start with. Also knowing your space will save you wasting a lot of cash on unsuitable plants that later need replacing because the original plants just could not thrive where you placed them.

TEXTURE AND HEIGHTS

Thinking about varying heights in a garden can add interest even in quite small areas. Putting in a raised patio, decking or flower bed or even having some plants in pots can bring variety and depth to any space. On a larger scale if you are changing a space such as filling in a pond or pool having a sunken are can also add to the appeal of the garden.

Splitting the garden into different areas can be fun to and encourage the visitor to move from one area to another to discover what is round the corner, making the garden an adventure as well.

Using different types of plants with differing textures will also alter the look of the garden.

COLOUR

Do remember that colour adds variety and interest as well. Using evergreen plants and different colours of foliage and flowers carefully will also add the overall effect. Gardening as sometimes been described as painting with flowers!

SOIL & CLIMATE

Knowing your soil type and local climate will also guide you in your landscape design as choosing the best plants for the soil and climate will maximise the potential of your new garden.
