Removing chewing gum from clothes and carpet

While many people enjoy chewing gum, it can get everywhere. Removing chewing gum from clothes or carpet can be difficult, but can get there very easily. Fortunately not all is lost if chewing gum does appear on carpet or clothes as there are ways of removing it.

Often the chewing gum will appear on the new clothes or in a visible place on the carpet - after all it will only appear on areas where people walk!

There are two main ways in which chewing gum can be removed from either clothes or carpet:

  • One way is to try to freeze the gum and then chip it off the fabric or shoe with a blunt knife. To do this it might be possible to either put the item in the freezer for a while or rub an ice cube over the gum on a carpet for instance.

  • Another way I have heard of is to use Dry Cleaning Fluid around the edges leaving it for a half a minute before lifting the gum off with a blunt knife. Dry Cleaning Fluid can usually be purchased at the smaller ironmonger / hardware shop on the high street or in supermarkets if you search the stain remover shelf reading bottle contents carefully.

These two ways of removing chewing gum from clothes or carpets have worked in the past, but always be careful to ensure that any methods to do further damaging the clothes or carpet by trying the ideas on a less visible area first.
