Household monthly budget - how to guide

- how to make and plan a household budget so that you can make your money go further.

One of the essential steps in making sure you don't overspend the money you have and get into debt is to make a monthly household budget. Knowing how to make a household budget is relatively straightforward, and once one has been made it is an invaluable tool in making sure you know how much money you can spend on everything each month and keep within your means.

The basic idea of a household monthly budget is to note down all the income, from all the sources. Having down this the next stage is to note down all your outgoings. If all is well, then the income should be greater than or equal to the outgoings. If not, then it is possible to see how any areas can be trimmed to make sure that income is never less than the outgoings.

List your household budget

In order to make sure everything is included in the monthly household budget, it is best to take everything step by step, making sure that everything has been included in the monthly budget and nothing has been forgotten.

A suggested list of items is included below, and they are sectioned in one way below, but make sure you think about any items that may be relevant to you and your monthly budget:

  1. Household monthly income:   In this section of the monthly budget, all income can be listed, and a monthly equivalent for any annual forms of income can be calculated. If overtime is included, beware that this can fall if the overtime is cut for any reason.

  2. Mortgage repayments and other loan repayments:   As it is necessary to ensure that any loan repayments are made without fail, these can be listed separately.

  3. Monthly living costs:   In this section all the general living costs can be listed. Some may be important whereas others may be able to be trimmed if necessary. By listing them all it is possible to see where your money is going.

  4. Final sum:   Once all the income and outgoings have been summed, it is possible to total them all up and see whether the income exceeds the outgoings, or whether it is round the other way.

With everything listed it is possible to see where all the money is going, and it also gives you a budget to keep within. If you go over budget in one area, you can see the other areas where you can cut back to ensure that you maintain the budget so you don't keep overspending.
